Breakfast Table

A story of food from the field to the table.

Food is the carrier of energy that helps sustain the vital operations and growth of living organisms. Synchronously, it functions as a powerful semiotic device that is reflective of societal conditions and collective representation. This body of work, inspired by the archives of Dr. Leslie Coleman and Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, explores different ways of harnessing the energy and symbolism of food as it transitions from raw to cooked.

This work was an immersive installation of subtle sensorial experiences and multi-media works, including moving images, sound, interactive artwork, paintings, games, embroidery, and sculpture, exploring the relationships between food and economy, society, science, culture, and gender in India.

Breakfast Table was conceptualised for and funded by the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore, India and made in collaboration with filmmaker and researcher Nausheen Khan and illustrator and designer Aparajitha Vaasudev.
